Create a child theme from a style kit?

Asked on November 3, 2015 in Customization.

Is it possible to create a Layers child theme and somehow use the style kit with the child theme and not the parent Layers theme?

I would like to be able to take the style kit css and just add it to he style.css file of the child theme instead of in the customizer.

But I don’t know what else would be involved.

If I understand you correctly, you have a style kit that you want to apply to a Layers child theme, right?

Since a Kit is just CSS, you can certainly use them in combination with child themes. The only caveat is that the Kit was probably written to override core CSS, whereas the child theme could be using any number of ways to restyle Layers that the kit won’t override.  It is not a good idea to add the kit CSS to the child theme CSS unless you created the child theme for personal use.  Since the child theme may have some of the same selectors, make sure you either use a CSS editor to find and replace the originals with the new kit styles, or place the kit CSS at the end of the document so it loads last.  See the following article for more on cascade order and overrides to help with merging:

The article is just what I needed. Have since started using DevKit. Thanks!
