Layers Docs uses Layers to build our guides and landing pages, and a custom child theme to add additional post meta support and custom post archives. Through custom functions, we hook into Layers to:
Our services run deep and are backed by over ten years of experience.
Layers Pro provides additional widgets and easy advanced customization of colors directly from the Customizer and adds additional features such as the social links in our footer.
Layers Docs makes extensive use of the DevKit plugin, which adds full CSS and JavaScript editors to the customizer. We use DevKit for rapid prototyping of new styling, fixing visual issues and running of styles we do not want permanently added to the child theme.
Layers Docs provides an extensive library of functions, hooks and definitions found in Layers and WordPress, all managed by the CM Glossary plugin, which creates a separate post type and index for these terms. Each one can then be cross-referenced throughout the site to provide the little info tooltips you see here and there.
You can’t offer code advice without ensuring the code looks good and is presented in a format that can be easily read and copied. There are a few syntax highlighters out there, but we find Crayon is the most reliable with the broadest customization. Best of all, it is completely free.
This free plugin adds the ability to print any post, page or page element with the click of a button while ensuring your theme’s styles are applied to the results. We use this to power PDF printing of our guides using your browser’s built-in print to PDF capabilities.
Funnelling your visitors through a support process just to report a broken link or problem with your websites isn’t always efficient. Plugins like Usernoise provide a quick way to gather feedback that is site-specific and managed directly within WordPress, helping you keep your support channels free of non-product chatter.
Search is the single most important feature of your knowledgebase, and in most cases the default search just wont cut it.
Relevanssi replaces the standard WordPress search with a better search engine. You’ll get better results and more control over presentation of results – your users will thank you!
Relevanssi is free, but offers a Premium version for multisites (like ours) or those that require advanced logging or filtering.
Our search form simply uses the standard WordPress searchform markup in a custom searchform.php that includes select fields which tell the form which site to search.
Sidebar navigation is key to helping your users move around and find what they need quickly. We use a handful of widget plugins to provide added functionality such as jump menus and image links.
Designed for both the average user and developer, Ultimate Posts Widgets aims to provide flexibility and ease of use for displaying any kinds of posts within your widget areas.
Possibly the most useful widget plugin – allows you to browse your Media Library to add any image to the sidebar, with alignment, link and custom css class options.
Contextual Related Posts is a powerful plugin for WordPress that allows you to display a list of related posts on your website and can be configured to also add post lists to single posts or RSS feeds (as seen on the forum)
This powerful plugin gives you complete control over the visibility of widgets based on any combination of conditions including category, post type, specific pages, etc and is actively supported by the author.
Since Layers went live in 2014, we’ve been through different hosts, slayed many dragons and tried a LOT of plugins aimed at improving the WordPress admin experience. Here is what we’ve found works well:
Auth0 is a single-sign-on (SSO) provider that enables you to login and participate on the Layers Community Forums using your social network accounts. This provides enhanced security, engagement and user experience. We use the free Auth0 plugin to handle connection to the Auth0 API and loading of its libraries.
Monitoring the integrity of links on your site is important for server performance, SEO and reader happiness. This free plugin checks our posts, comments and other content for broken links and missing images, and notifies us if any are found.
This free plugin allows us to take individual articles created to promote searchability and navigation, and build single-page, printable guides from multiple posts. When the post is updated, it is automatically updated everywhere it is included. Neat!
When working with a site built around search and SEO, it is really important page slugs never get changed. We use Page Links To to setup redirects for old pages, or URLs that may be linked from outside sources to help cust down on 404 responses.
Another plugin for reducing content duplication, Post Snippets manages a library of content or HTML code that can be reused in posts and pages, giving you one place to keep it updated. We use this to pull in things like code snippets and Install steps.
The leading stat plugin for WordPress, Slimstat provides us with real-time activity log, server latency, heatmaps, email reports, data export, geolocation, browser and platform detection to help us tailor the content and experience beyond what Google Analytics provides.
W3 Total Cache improves the user experience of your site by increasing server performance, reducing the download times and providing transparent content delivery network (CDN) integration. This plugin is not for everyone, so be sure to check with your host first!.
Yoast SEO(aka WordPress SEO) is the most complete SEO plugin that exists today for WordPress. It incorporates everything from a snippet editor and real time page analysis functionality that helps you optimize your pages content, images titles, meta descriptions and more to XML sitemaps, and loads of optimization options in between.
